Six people have been shot and killed in various locations in Mississippi’s Tate county, and one person has been arrested in connection with the slayings, local media have reported.

The shootings all happened within the community of Arkabutla, local television station NBC5 reported, citing the Tate county sheriff, Brad Lance.

Lance told reporters that a man went into a local store with a gun, shot another man, went to a nearby home and shot a woman.

Then, Lance said, the man went to another home, fatally shot two people there and had driven away when a sheriff’s deputy on the lookout for the man’s car tried to pull him over.

The man led the deputy on a chase, pulled into the driveway of another home and was arrested, Lance said. There, investigators found a person dead in a car and another dead in the drive, Lance added.

Lance said the arrested man lived at the second of the three homes he mentioned during the Friday briefing with reporters.

No other details were immediately available.

Arkabutla’s population is less than 300 and the community sits on a lake about 45 miles south of the Tennessee city of Memphis.
